Permineralized wood is wood that has been turned to stone through a process called permineralization, a type of fossilization. Groundwater rich in minerals like silica flows through the wood's pores, filling them in and creating a 3D mold of the original wood. The organic matter is eventually replaced by minerals, but the wood's original structure is preserved.
