Cordierite is a silicate mineral, often found in metamorphic and igneous rocks, that exhibits strong pleochroism, meaning it appears different colors when viewed from different angles. It ranges in color from blue to violet. It's known as "iolite" in the gem and jewelry trade when it's transparent and of gem quality.

Iolite can be found with inclusions of Apatite, Mica, Hematite and/or Sunstone, to name a few.

 When mixed with Sunstone, you get the signature deep blue-violet of the iolite alongside the metallic, fiery flashes (aventurescence) of the sunstone, which are caused by tiny hematite or goethite platelets.
