Shungite is a unique, naturally-occurring carbon-rich mineraloid predominantly found in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. It's known for its high carbon content (up to 98% in some varieties), and is considered a rare mineraloid. Shungite is believed to have formed through the metamorphism of organic matter, particularly crude oil, over billions of years.
